"Hypnosis, once scorned as wizardry more appropriate for the stage than a doctor's office, has gained respect among medical professionals. Many view it as an efficient tool for treating problems not caused by serious disorders.

1. What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a shift of awareness from the surrounding environment to the internal mind.   It is a normal, natural state somewhere between being awake and asleep and is experienced by people on a daily basis.  Daydreaming and highway hypnosis are examples of common hypnotic trances.  Hypnosis is characterized by concentration, relaxation, suggestion and expectation.      Return to top

2. What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnotic suggestions given by a certified hypnotherapist with the intent of creating a shift in attitude and resulting in self improvement and/or the release of problems. To achieve results the person must have a conscious desire for change and must be in agreement with the suggestions given by the hypnotherapist.      Return to top

3. How can hypnosis be used?
Hypnosis is used for a variety of goals ranging from simple entertainment to achievement of long time goals.  Many people turn to the power of their subconscious mind to better manage weight and to change habits and addictions such as smoking or drugs, but this is only the beginning of the list.  Basically, if the problem is in your subconscious, hypnosis can help with only a small investment of time, money, and effort.     Return to top

4. How is the subconscious mind accessed?
The conscious mind houses willpower and rational thought while the subconscious mind contains emotions and habits.  Only 10% of behavior is controlled by the conscious mind which is limited by its inability to communicate directly with the subconscious.  Accessing the power of the subconscious requires some type of an intervention, perhaps a hypnotherapist acting as a guide or a self hypnosis CD allowing you to be your own guide.      Return to top

5. Is hypnotherapy the same as meditation?
Both hypnotherapy and meditation allow the user to get in touch with their INNER CALM.  Hypnotherapy however allows the user to create desired improvements and/or changes.      Return to top

6. How do I know if I can be hypnotized?
Because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, the power of hypnosis lies within the mind of client. EVERYONE with normal brain functioning and the desire to be hypnotized can be hypnotized.  To gather more information about your ability to be hypnotized listen to our Power Nap or take our hypnotizability test.      Return to top

7. How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis is effective way to create change because it works directly with the subconscious mind.  Techniques tailored to your needs will allow access for new suggestions to pass the excuses in the conscious mind.  The subconscious mind views situations objectively and is able to change and improve patterns of behaviors according to your core desires and motivations. There are certain abilities which are enhanced during the actual hypnotic process itself: (a) the ability to IMAGINE, (b) the ability to REMEMBER, (c) the CREATIVE abilities, and (d) RESPONSIVENESS TO SUGGESTIONS.   It is these abilities that are utilized to assist you in achieving your chosen goal. There are certain abilities which are enhanced during the actual hypnotic process itself: (a) the ability to IMAGINE, (b) the ability to REMEMBER, (c) the CREATIVE abilities, and (d) RESPONSIVENESS TO SUGGESTIONS. 8. Who is in control during hypnosis?
Hypnosis cannot detach the ego so YOU ARE ALWAYS IN CONTROL.  Actually, hypnosis restores a freedom of choice that perhaps you have not had for years.  It is a common misconception that someone else is making you do something.  If the hypnotherapist took control, none of us would have Visa bills or home mortgages.  As a general rule, if a client is given a suggestion inconsistent with their value system or their conscious desires, the suggestion would be dismissed or the client might return to normal awareness.

Need more convincing?  While enjoying a good movie, if your phone rang, you would hear it and react to it, wouldn’t you?  Yes, it is true that one can choose to enter deep states of hypnosis while still retaining the power to resist unwanted suggestions. Return to top

9. Will I cluck like a chicken?
People attend stage hypnosis shows to entertain or to be entertained….not for self improvement.  Silly antics are performed because the volunteers want to provide a good laugh, not because the hypnotist has control.  So if you want to cluck like a chicken, attend a stage hypnosis show; if you want permanent change, schedule an appointment with Renaissance Hypnosis Center.      Return to top

10. Do I have to do anything to make hypnosis successful?
Hypnosis requires only a genuine desire to change a behavior or develop a different part of your persona.  Once you choose to allow an idea to take hold in your subconscious it does the rest.  New behaviors will just seem normal.  So recline and enjoy what your subconscious can do to support your conscious.      Return to top

11. How effective is hypnosis?
A comparative study presented in the American Health Magazine gives the following results:
Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions
Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions
Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions      Return to top

12. Is hypnosis dangerous?
Hypnosis is a normal, natural state.  Every night before you fall asleep you pass through a state of self hypnosis.  Hypnosis is no more dangerous than falling asleep. Return to top

13. How does hypnosis feel?
Hypnosis is just like daydreaming, and you will feel no different than you do while relaxing in an easy chair with a good book. Everyone’s experience is uniquely created by their own subconscious.  Most people experience a natural state of mental and physical relaxation. Some feel heavy, some light, who knows what you will experience, but it is fun to find out.  In a state of light hypnosis, it is entirely possible for someone to believe that he or she was not hypnotized.  But when you begin to notice improvements in your chosen area through no conscious effort on your part, you will soon be convinced otherwise.      Return to top

14. When will I see results?
Though results vary according to each individual, most clients see results in just one to three sessions as hypnosis is not intended to be a long term intervention or support.  Some results are immediate and obvious; a previous smoker no longer uses tobacco, or a previous insomniac sleeps peacefully throughout the night. Other results can be subtle but equally as profound; a shy person is able to set healthy boundaries or a struggling student studies efficiently and effectively.      Return to top

Did You Know...

"The word hypnosis comes from the Greek work for sleep," says Dr Hoover. "But actually, you are not asleep, you are focused and have more self-control."

Dr. LD Hoover
psychiatrist

(Annapolis, MD), 4/0

You do not give up control of yourself when you are hypnotized. You actually have more control because you are face to face with your core beliefs. As Vicktor Franklin says, "Everything can be taken away from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way".
